Maintaining Electric Vehicles

Most people seem to agree that maintaining electric vehicles is cheaper and easier than vehicles running on gas. Benjamin Preston in his article writes that "New research from Consumer Reports shows that pure electric vehicles—which have fewer moving parts—need less maintenance, and generally cost less to repair than the average gas-powered vehicle".

This is bound to attract more buyers.

It is remarkable that the maintenance schedule for the 2019 Chevrolet Bolt EV given in this article by MYEV.com, has only one pure EV maintenance task: coolant level check! The other tasks are all common with gas powered vehicles.

Repair of EVs does need special skills and precautions to stay safe from the high voltage. Wesley van Barlingen in his article at Fixico says that "As electric vehicles (EVs) continue to gain popularity for their low energy consumption and affordable prices, the difficulty of their repairs will also continue to increase. Newer models of EVs are known to bring levels of complexity that often lead to higher repair costs and extended repair duration".

The most expensive component to replace is the battery. However, batteries have a warranty, for example the Tata Nexon has a warranty for the battery and the motor for 8 years or 160000 kms as mentioned in this Youtube video. Also, in the article at MYEV.com we get to know that " only a relative handful of electric cars manufactured to date have reportedly degraded to the point where they needed (the battery) to be replaced".
